How to Create a Personalized GLP-1 Meal Plan with ChatGPT

Illustration of a woman planning healthy meals on a tablet surrounded by vegetables, with the title How to Create a Personalized GLP-1 Meal Plan with ChatGPT

When your appetite changes on a GLP-1, figuring out what to eat can feel like starting over. Many of my patients already use ChatGPT, so I started showing them how to use it the right way: with their own nutrition goals, not generic “healthy” menus.

AI doesn’t replace your dietitian. But set up well, it can be a helpful meal-planning assistant between appointments. Here’s how I teach my patients to do it, step by step.

Why Use Projects Instead of a Single Chat

You can absolutely use a regular ChatGPT conversation to brainstorm meals. But if you want to use AI regularly for meal planning, a Project makes it much easier to stay organized.

Projects keep related chats, files, and instructions together, so you can build on previous work instead of starting from scratch every time. Think of it as a little home base for your meal planning.

Here’s why that matters:

  • It saves time: you don’t have to retype your information every time you want a new meal plan.
  • It keeps things organized: your nutrition goals, food preferences, and meal planning information stay together.
  • It grows with you: you can update your project as your appetite, goals, or medication dose changes.
  • It keeps everything in one place: your profile, past plans, and updates all live together, easy to find.

Step 1: Create a Project in ChatGPT

Start a new project in ChatGPT and name it something like GLP-1 Meal Planner. Projects are available on every ChatGPT plan, including the free one. The free plan limits how many files you can add to a project, but you only need one: your nutrition profile.

Using a different AI tool? Claude and Gemini have similar features, and the same steps work there too.

Step 2: Create Your GLP-1 Nutrition Profile

Before asking ChatGPT to create your meal plan, give it a clear nutrition framework. This helps it create meals that support your goals instead of simply giving you a list of “healthy” foods.

I created a GLP-1 Nutrition Profile template you can use to organize the information ChatGPT needs to create more personalized meal plans.

Download the free GLP-1 Nutrition Profile template here.

You don’t have to fill out every section if it doesn’t apply to you. The goal is to give ChatGPT enough information to understand your nutrition goals, preferences, lifestyle, and the practical details that will affect your meal plans.

Your profile will include information such as:

Basic Information

  • Age
  • Sex
  • Height
  • Current weight
  • Typical activity level

ChatGPT can use these details to estimate how many calories you need.

Your Goals

Tell ChatGPT what you are trying to accomplish. For example:

  • Weight loss
  • Weight maintenance
  • Improving the quality of your diet
  • Increasing protein
  • Increasing fiber
  • Supporting regularity
  • Eating more consistently

If your dietitian or healthcare professional has already given you calorie, protein, or fiber goals, include those too.

Needs Related to GLP-1

  • Side effects or food tolerances (for example, nausea or reflux)
  • Notes for the day after your injection: do lighter meals or smoothies feel better than bigger meals?

Menopause Needs

  • Menopause symptoms that affect how you eat, like hot flashes, poor sleep, or cravings

Eating Pattern

  • How many meals and snacks you typically have
  • Your usual meal times
  • Your work or school schedule
  • Whether you eat away from home
  • Whether you meal prep or rely on leftovers
  • How often you cook
  • How much time you usually have to prepare meals
  • Whether you prefer variety or repeating favorite meals

Food Preferences

Add as many details as you want!

  • Foods you love
  • Foods you dislike
  • Favorite cuisines
  • Foods you avoid
  • Food allergies
  • Dietary restrictions

Shopping and Budget

  • Stores (Costco, Aldi, Publix, etc.)
  • Weekly budget: $____ for ___ people

Cooking Lifestyle

Tell ChatGPT what you have available and how you like to cook.

  • Appliances available, such as a stove, oven, air fryer, Instant Pot, blender, or microwave
  • How much time you typically have to cook
  • Your comfort level with cooking
  • Whether you prefer meal prep, batch cooking, leftovers, or quick meals made the same day

Family Needs

  • Number of people you usually cook for
  • How often you want family- or kid-friendly meals
  • Any family food preferences that should be considered

Tip: Save this document outside ChatGPT for easy editing. When you make updates, upload the new version to your project.

Texture or Tolerance Notes

Foods or textures that are easy to tolerate (for example, soups, cooked vegetables, smoothies).

Notes for ChatGPT

Optional preferences. This gives ChatGPT more context about how you like your meal plans created.

Example: I prefer easy weekday meals and one fun recipe on the weekend.

A Quick Privacy Note

You don’t need to include your name or other identifying information in your nutrition profile. Before entering personal health information into any AI tool, review its privacy and data settings and make sure you’re comfortable with how your information is handled. In ChatGPT, you can find these under Settings, then Data controls, where you can choose whether your chats are used to improve its models.

Step 3: Upload the File

Once your profile is complete, upload it to your ChatGPT Project. Now ChatGPT has the basic information it needs in one place.

Instead of explaining who you are and what you need every time, you can refer back to your profile when creating meal plans, adjusting recipes, or figuring out what to eat. You create it once, then build from it.

Step 4: Let ChatGPT Help With the Math

Now that you have uploaded your profile, you can ask ChatGPT to help calculate your nutrition needs. This is where AI is especially useful, because you don’t have to do the calculations yourself.

Calculate Your Estimated Calorie Needs

Paste this into ChatGPT:

“Using the information in my uploaded GLP-1 Nutrition Profile, calculate my estimated calorie needs using the Mifflin-St Jeor equation. Please use my age, sex, height, weight, and activity level from the profile. Show me my estimated resting energy expenditure and estimated total daily energy expenditure, and briefly explain how you calculated each number.”

This gives you an estimated starting point. Keep in mind that this number is about what it takes to maintain your weight. If your goal is weight loss, your calorie target will be lower, and your dietitian can help you choose the right one.

Remember, estimated calorie needs are just that: estimates. Your actual needs can vary based on many factors, and a calorie target from AI should not be treated as an exact prescription. If you are working with a dietitian or healthcare professional, use their recommendations to guide your nutrition plan.

Set Your Protein, Carbohydrate, and Fat Targets

Once you have a calorie target, you can ask ChatGPT to do the math for your macronutrients. For example:

“Using the calorie target calculated above, calculate my daily protein, carbohydrate, and fat targets using these percentages: Protein: 30% of calories. Carbohydrates: 40% of calories. Fat: 30% of calories. Please give me each target in grams.”

For example, at 1,500 calories per day, this calculation would give you approximately:

  • 113 grams of protein
  • 150 grams of carbohydrates
  • 50 grams of fat

These percentages are an example framework, not a universal prescription. Your ideal targets may be different depending on your goals, health history, activity level, preferences, and guidance from your healthcare professional.

Need ideas to hit your protein target? See my High-Protein Foods List.

Set Your Fiber Goal

You can also have ChatGPT calculate a minimum fiber goal based on your calorie target. Try:

“Based on my calorie target, calculate my minimum daily fiber goal using 14 grams of fiber per 1,000 calories. Also tell me what a practical daily fiber goal would be for me.”

For example, at 1,500 calories, the calculation would give you a minimum of about 21 grams of fiber per day. Depending on your individual needs, you may want to aim higher. For many women, about 25 grams a day is a practical goal. For ideas, see my High-Fiber Foods List.

Now ChatGPT has a nutrition framework to work within, which is much more useful than a generic request for a healthy menu.

One important reminder: AI-generated nutrition estimates are not always accurate. Treat calorie, protein, carbohydrate, fat, and fiber numbers as estimates, and use your judgment, food labels, or guidance from your dietitian when precision matters.

Step 5: Ask for Your Plan

Now prompt ChatGPT:

“Create a 5-day GLP-1 meal plan with recipes, protein and fiber counts, prep tips, and a shopping list.”

You’ll get a customized plan with meals and recipes built around your needs. Want to see what a finished plan can look like? Take a look at my 5-Day GLP-1 Meal Plan.

Step 6: Refine for Flavor and Tolerance

Now that ChatGPT has created your first GLP-1 meal plan, personalize it, just like you would with your dietitian. If a meal doesn’t sound appealing or you’d prefer one of your favorites, ask ChatGPT to adjust it. For example:

“Remove the shrimp stir-fry and add a chicken dish instead.”

On days when your stomach feels more sensitive, ask for gentler options:

“Update the recipes with mild flavors, herbs, and sauces that are easy to digest.”

You might get meals like:

  • Honey-Lime Shrimp and Rice Bowl
  • Creamy Yogurt Parfait with High-Protein Granola
  • Soft Salmon with Dill and Roasted Vegetables

Keep refining until the plan fits your appetite, taste, and comfort. The more feedback you give, the better ChatGPT can tailor your next plan.

Step 7: Save, Export, and Reuse

Once you’re happy with your plan, type:

“Export my GLP-1 meal plan as a Word or PDF with recipes and a shopping list.”

If the download link doesn’t work, ask ChatGPT to show the plan as text instead, then copy it into Google Docs or Word.

You can store multiple versions inside your project, like easy-to-digest options or family-friendly plans, and reuse them anytime.

Step 8: Adjust as Your Medication Changes

Your appetite and tolerance may shift as your dose changes. Keep your project updated so ChatGPT can adapt your meal plans as your needs change. Try prompts like:

“Add more fiber-rich foods and include prunes. I am experiencing constipation.”

“Focus on soft meals this week. I’m experiencing nausea.”

You Don’t Have to Create a Full Meal Plan

One of my clients gave me an idea I really liked: you don’t have to ask ChatGPT to create an entire meal plan. You can use it throughout the day as a meal planning assistant.

Tell it what you’ve eaten so far, your nutrition goals, and what you have available at home. Then ask what you could eat next. For example:

“So far today I’ve had Greek yogurt with berries for breakfast and a turkey sandwich with an apple for lunch. My goal is 100 grams of protein and 25 grams of fiber today. Based on what I’ve eaten, what are 2 or 3 easy dinner or snack ideas that could help me get closer to those goals?”

Or tell it what’s in your kitchen:

“So far today I’ve had eggs and toast for breakfast and a chicken salad for lunch. I’m aiming for 100 grams of protein and 25 grams of fiber today. I have cottage cheese, berries, edamame, tortillas, and leftover roasted vegetables in my kitchen. What could I make for dinner or have as a snack to help me get closer to my goals?”

Dietitian Tips for GLP-1 Meal Planning

No matter which approach you use, these tips will help you stay nourished and comfortable:

  • Prioritize protein: it supports lean muscle and keeps you full.
  • Add fiber: it supports regularity, but increase it gradually and pair it with enough fluids.
  • Stay hydrated: sip fluids throughout the day.
  • Meal prep smart: smaller meals may feel more comfortable when your appetite is low or you’re having stomach symptoms.
  • Lean on smoothies and yogurt: smoothies and yogurt-based breakfasts and snacks work well on low-appetite days.

A Dietitian’s Take

ChatGPT Projects won’t replace individualized care, but they can make balanced eating simpler when you’re taking a GLP-1 medication. When structure meets flexibility, it becomes less about restriction and more about creating a pattern of eating that truly supports your health.
